Why it works
Most of the money that goes missing in a month goes in small amounts nobody plans: a snack, a delivery fee, an app purchase, a "while I am here" item. A week of saying no to all of it makes those habits visible, and a week is short enough that almost anyone can finish it.
The rules
- Write your essentials list before day 1: rent or mortgage, bills already due, groceries from a list, fuel or transit, medicine.
- Everything else waits until the week is over.
- Gifts and emergencies are allowed. Decide in advance what counts as an emergency.
- Use what you have: pantry food, free entertainment, things you already own.
The plan
- Day 1Write your essentials list and stick it on the fridge. Check the pantry and freezer and plan three meals from what is there.
- Day 2Delete saved cards from one shopping app or website. One extra step at checkout is often enough to stop an impulse buy.
- Day 3Pack lunch and a drink. Note the moment you would normally buy something, and what triggered it.
- Day 4Plan one free thing for the weekend: a park, the library, a walk somewhere new, a board game night.
- Day 5Unsubscribe from three shop newsletters that tempt you.
- Day 6Cook something from the back of the cupboard.
- Day 7Check your bank app. Compare this week with a normal week and write down the one habit that surprised you most.

Tips
- Tell one person you are doing it. Saying no is easier when someone knows.
- Keep a short list of things you wanted to buy. Look at it again next week; most of it will not matter.
- Carry a water bottle and a snack. Hunger and thirst cause a surprising number of small purchases.
If you slip
A slip does not end the challenge. Write down what you bought and why, then carry on with the next day. The note is more useful than a perfect streak.
When you finish
Move the money you did not spend into savings on day 7, so the result is real and not just a feeling.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy groceries during a no-spend week?
Yes. Groceries from a list are an essential. The challenge is about unplanned spending, not going hungry.
What counts as an essential?
Whatever you write on your list before day 1. Usually housing, bills, groceries, transport to work and medicine.
