How cost per use works

Cost per use is the total cost of owning something divided by the number of times you use it. Total cost is the price, plus any running costs, minus anything you get back when you sell it. A $140 pair of boots worn 8 times a month for three years is 288 wears, or about 49 cents a wear. A $40 pair that lasts six months is 48 wears, or about 83 cents a wear.

It is a guide, not a rule: be honest about how often you will really use something. See frugal vs cheap for more.
