Why it works
A week shows you the leaks; a month changes habits. By the third week most people stop noticing the things they used to buy on autopilot, and many find they did not miss them.
The rules
- Write your essentials list before you start, with a grocery budget.
- No eating out, takeaway, new clothes, gadgets, décor or hobby gear unless it is on the list.
- Plan for known events: birthdays, a wedding, a trip. Set aside the money for those first.
- Keep a "want list" instead of buying. Review it at the end.
The plan
- Week 1Set up: essentials list, grocery budget, want list. Use up what is in the pantry and freezer.
- Week 2Free fun: plan two free activities. Swap a takeaway night for a cooked "fakeaway" at home.
- Week 3The hard week. Expect cravings and boredom. Sell or donate one thing you no longer use.
- Week 4Look back: total what you did not spend and decide where it goes. Review the want list and cross off what you no longer want.

Tips
- Plan your meals each week. Most no-spend months fail in the kitchen on a tired evening.
- Find a free hobby for the month: the library, walking, running, drawing, a free course.
- Cash out a small "oops" fund in advance, so a real need does not wreck the month.
If you slip
Missing a day is normal. Note it, see what triggered it, and keep going. Twenty-seven good days out of thirty is a big change.
When you finish
At the end, choose one habit to keep, such as one takeaway a month instead of one a week, and move the unspent money into savings or debt the same day.
