Four weekends of having fun without paying for it. A good counterweight to a no-spend month.

Why it works

Entertainment is one of the easiest budget lines to grow without noticing. Free fun is not second best; it is often more memorable.

The rules

  • Plan one free activity each weekend.
  • Pack food and drinks.
  • Invite someone; free things are better shared.

The plan

  1. Weekend 1Explore: a park, beach, trail or neighborhood you have not been to.
  2. Weekend 2Culture: a free museum day, library event or local festival.
  3. Weekend 3Home: game night, movie night with library DVDs, or a potluck.
  4. Weekend 4Learn: a free online course, a skill swap or volunteering.

Tips

  • Check your library: many lend museum passes, games, tools and e-books.
  • Local council and city websites list free events.

If you slip

Paid for something? No problem; plan a free one next weekend.

When you finish

Keep a list of the best free things you found for next time.
