Why it works

A $5 coffee five days a week is $1,300 a year. A good cup at home costs well under a dollar. The challenge is finding a home routine you enjoy.

The rules

  • Make coffee at home or at work for 21 days.
  • One café coffee a week as a planned treat is allowed.

The plan

  1. Week 1Find your method: a cafetière, moka pot, pour-over or the machine at work. Buy beans you like.
  2. Week 2Get a good travel cup. Make it the night before if mornings are rushed.
  3. Week 3Work out what you saved with the latte factor calculator.

Tips

  • Freshly ground beans make the biggest difference to taste.
  • Cold brew made in a jar overnight is cheap and easy.

If you slip

Bought a coffee? Enjoy it and get back on track tomorrow.

When you finish

Keep one café visit a week as a treat, if you like. It feels better when it is a choice.
