Why it works
Cards make spending feel abstract. Physical cash, in a set amount, makes you notice every purchase, and an empty envelope is a clear signal.
The rules
- Choose three to five flexible categories, such as groceries, eating out, fun and fuel.
- Withdraw the month’s budget for each and split it into four weekly envelopes.
- Spend only from the envelope. Leftover cash rolls over or goes to savings.
The plan
- Week 1Set categories and amounts. Use only envelope cash.
- Week 2Adjust: if one envelope ran out early, decide whether the budget or the habit needs changing.
- Week 3Keep going; note what you bought less of.
- Week 4Count what is left. Move it to savings.

Tips
- If you pay mostly online, use a separate debit account per category instead of cash.
- Keep envelopes at home and carry only the week’s amount.
If you slip
Borrowing from another envelope is allowed once a week. Write it on both envelopes.
When you finish
Keep the categories that worked. Many people keep groceries and eating out on cash for good.
