Driving less is the biggest lever, but drivers can also save a lot by how they drive and maintain the car.

The habits

1

Combine errands into one trip Easy

Plan one loop for shopping, post and pick-ups instead of several short drives.

2

Drive smoothly Easy

Gentle acceleration and braking, and keeping to the speed limit, use noticeably less fuel.

3

Check tire pressure monthly Easy

Under-inflated tires wear faster and use more fuel. Most fuel stations have a free or cheap pump.

4

Walk or cycle short trips Some effort

Trips under two miles are often quicker on foot or by bike once parking is counted.

5

Compare fuel prices on your route Easy

Fuel price apps show the cheapest station nearby. Do not drive out of your way for a few cents.

6

Keep up basic maintenance Easy

Oil changes and small fixes on time prevent expensive repairs later.

Example figures are simple arithmetic to show how amounts add up. Your numbers will differ.
