The unit price is the price per ounce, pound, liter, 100 grams or item. It is the fairest way to compare different pack sizes.

Where to find it

On most shelf labels, in smaller print next to the price. Online shops usually show it under the price.

How to work it out yourself

Divide the price by the amount. A 24 oz jar at $3.60 is 15 cents an ounce. Our unit price calculator compares up to four packs at once, even in different units.

Watch for

  • Different units on the same shelf: one label per ounce, the next per pound. Convert first (16 ounces to the pound).
  • Offers on small packs: a discount can make the small pack cheaper per unit than the big one.
  • Per item vs per weight: for things like dishwasher tablets, compare the price per tablet.

When the cheaper unit price is wrong

If you will throw half away, the big pack is not cheaper. Buy large only for things you use up before they spoil.

Frequently asked questions

Is bigger always cheaper?

Usually but not always. Offers on small packs can make them cheaper per unit, so check the unit price.
